Wednesday WIPs: Something New!

Image
With my Shark Tooth Tee done, I’m still working on my Homage to the Granny Square class, and started a new project. For my granny squares/color class, I have finished the 4th type of square, and have 4 more to go, but at least there are fewer of the upcoming types. So this is all of the small popcorns – on to the medium popcorns! Over the weekend I have started on a project I have been mentally preparing for since I got the pattern and yarn earlier this year, the Open Weave wrap ( Ravelry link ), designed by Nancy Marchant. I was kind of thinking this was going to be really hard, but it’s not – it’s pretty straightforward! The biggest hassle is keeping yarn ends from tangling. The yarn I’m using is & Make DK from The Fiber Co. I’m really enjoying working with it. It’s an interesting fiber blend – mostly wool and alpaca with 10% linen. The colors I’m using are Betty White (white), Hot Like Me (red), Wink (darker blue), and Potion (lighter blue). Before I started this, I was thi...

Baking Experiment: Angel Food Cake

Image
July’s cake experiment is Angel Food . It took me a little while to get going on this because I needed to order the special pan, then I needed to get enough eggs (because it takes more eggs than I would have thought), then I needed to pick a day when I wasn’t too tired. And today was finally that day! Angel Food is a different type of cake than what I have previously baked because it depends on whipped egg whites for it’s structure and volume. And that is a little tricky. But I got one baked, and it did not collapse! Yay! It stayed up! That said, I think I should have whipped the egg whites for just the slightest little bit more, because it is a little denser than I think it should be. However, if you whip egg whites too much, and they can just kind of coagulate completely and squish out all the moisture and then you’ve just wasted a dozen egg whites. Anyway. This left me with a lot of egg yolks, which I didn’t want to waste, so while the cake was baking, I made a batch of lemon ...

FO: Shark Tooth Tee Done!

Image
Last week got away from me – busy times. However, I did manage to finish off my Shark Tooth Tee! There are a few ends that need to get woven in, but otherwise it is good to go! The pattern is Shark Tooth Tee ( Ravelry link ) The yarn I used is Plymouth Yarns Covington colorway 2034, which I put in my stash in 2015 (!). I have around 1/3 of a ball left, so I’m pretty happy with that. I only did one modification on this – the pattern has the shark tooth lace part only on the back. I decided to do it on the front as well because I like the look of it. I am very happy with it! The yarn is 100% cotton, so it is light for warm weather and a nice cover up over a tank. I think this is one of those tops I will get a lot of use out of.
